RC Big Rock Switchgrass is a new and improved native upland switchgrass bred from Cave-In-Rock genetics. Commonly reaching 7–9 feet under proper conditions, it creates dense vertical structure ideal for screening, deer bedding, and winter thermal cover. It matures slightly later than Cave-In-Rock and is selected for strong stem strength and dependable winter standability. This variety is well adapted across much of the Midwest, Northeast, and Central United States. It performs best in full sun and well-drained soils, but it has done very well in areas with partial shade and seasonal flooding.
