Hairy Vetch
Food Plot: Hairy Vetch is used by some food plotters as a nitrogen fixer as well as a food source for wildlife, especially in the summer before planting fall plots.
Cover Crop: Hairy vetch is a hardy, fast-growing legume often used as a cover crop to improve soil health. It excels at fixing nitrogen, enriching the soil with this essential nutrient for future crops. Hairy vetch also helps prevent soil erosion, suppresses weeds by outcompeting them, and improves soil structure with its deep root system. Additionally, it provides organic matter that enhances soil fertility. This cover crop can be used in both winter and summer plantings, depending on the climate, and is especially valuable in crop rotations to reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers.
